This year, the EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal is awarding two scholarships of $ 50,000 each to two managers of non-profit organizations: Ms. Lai-Ling Lee Rodriguez, Director, Americas at the Canadian Red Cross and Mr. Mark Gillespie, creative director and General Manager of YOA Orchestra of the Americas, an orchestra of talented young musicians, aged 18-30 years, from 26 countries.
With over twenty years of experience in the field of non-profit organizations, Ms. Lee Rodriguez will demystify the unique structure and specific mandate of humanitarian organizations such as the Red Cross for her future classmates. She chose to undertake the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA program in order to update her knowledge of theories, tools and management concepts. She also has some specific objectives “I believe that the EMBA would provide me with better insight and better understanding of the challenges faced by peers working in the private sector. The Mintzberg approach offered by the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA appeals to me knowing that in most of my work environments, not enough time and importance is given to reflection and analysis.”
Mark Gillespie is also co-founder and board member of the National Youth Philharmonic of the Dominican Republic, the National Youth Orchestra and Choir of Belize and the National Youth Philharmonic of Colombia. 
After more than eight years in the field of arts administration, cultural diplomacy and the promotion of classical music worldwide, Mr. Gillespie notes that the managers of this sector, although genuinely passionate, often see reality with the same viewpoint. By joining the EMBA and its diverse cohort of experienced managers, he wants to learn from managers of different backgrounds: “My interest in pursuing the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA is to expand the perspective with which I approach the field of Arts management, bringing new insights of contemporary market-oriented models to a field beset by the paradigms of a bygone era. I hope to push the world of Arts management beyond traditional non-profit structures – cultivating a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, and value-creation to help institutions become more relevant, more adaptable, and more sustainable”.
Every year since its launch, the EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal has offered scholarships to non-profit managers. These grants, awarded on the basis of need and merit, contribute to the diversity of participants in the class which is one of the key values of the program. In addition to general admission requirements of the program, candidates must all demonstrate proven skills of reflection, authentic leadership and intellectual curiosity.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP
Executives, senior and mid-level managers, professionals and entrepreneurs of Indigenous origin and managers from non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply to the McGill – HEC Montréal EMBA program and indicate interest in the scholarship in the application form. The selection committee will consider each application, taking into account the following admission criteria:
- A capacity for leadership;
- An intellectual curiosity and ability to reflect;
- An undergraduate degree;
- At least 10 years of work experience, including five years in management positions.
- The ability to speak and write in either English or French and to understand and be able to read the other language.
