Elliot Lifson was named to the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canada’s economic growth as well as for his tremendous involvement in his industry and the community. Our Patron of the 2020 class shares words of wisdom and inspiration.

How did you receive this news?

I was very moved and excited to accept this incredible honor. I proudly wear the brooch on my jacket, I did not expect to obtain this privilege. I have always greatly admired those who stood out in their career and who adorned this proud symbol of recognition.

If you had a key motto for the businesswomen and men who read us, what would it be?

It may sound simplistic, but you must love what you do every day. I practiced law for a while, but it didn’t interest me. When I did my MBA and entered the business world, things changed for me. We choose to do an MBA or an EMBA because we know that we do not want to live with regret 3-4-5 years later and think: I should have done it!

If we don’t like what we do daily, we are to blame. In this case, something must be changed. My advice is: Stand up, love what you are doing, and do it right now.

What is your approach in business?

Mr. Lifson teaches at McGill and derives great pleasure from it. He preaches to his students that we must recognize each other’s predispositions to give, to receive, or to connect (he recommends the work of Adam Grant, professor of organizational psychology, entitled Give and Take). In business, Mr. Lifson has put his heart into his day to day, he has given without expecting to receive.

“The return will come eventually. Give and don’t count. Things turn out well when you invest yourself out of interest without expecting a return. Personally, I get the most satisfaction out of what I do when I can contribute.”

A personal style that has style!

A true legend in the clothing industry with Montreal-based Peerless Clothing, Mr. Lifson explains that he likes to work in the quiet of his office and despite the pandemic he still wears a nice sports jacket. “Don’t hesitate to look stylish on zoom!” he suggests with enthusiasm.  Mr. Lifson’s benevolence is a source of inspiration for those who have encountered him throughout a life devoted to listening, helping one another, and taking action.
