Recommendations for an effective board How can you make sure to have an effective board of directors? Here are recommendations from: Louise St-Pierre, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Cogeco Connexion, president of the board of Domaine Forget; Josée Duplessis (EMBA 2016), Chief of Staff for the Minister of Family, Children and Social Development of Canada; Guillaume Lavoie (EMBA 2016), partner at Lavery and member of the firm's board of directors; Ginette Mailhot (EMBA 2014), founder of Capital Humain Plus, president of the board of the Economic Development Corporation of the MRC de Joliette. Decide if you really want/need to have a Board of Directors. Ginette Mailhot is an experienced entrepreneur. She believes that entrepreneurs are often reluctant to create a board of directors (or an Advisory Board) because they believe "it can weigh you down and it is expensive". While there is some truth to that, Ginette is convinced that having a board “ensures rigor.” Working with a board requires a certain amount of structure, which can lead to greater efficiency. Think about who you want as board members. For Louise St-Pierre, it is important to fight for diversity, in all its forms. And, she notes, we all have prejudices, so we need to make sure that they do not influence our choices. According to Ginette Mailhot, people external to your company are important. They can be particularly helpful in areas where you may lack internal expertise. She recommends daring to ask people who have extensive expertise, people you admire. Ginette Mailhot appointed President of the Board of Directors of Anges Québec Ginette Mailhot is a real believer in supporting the development of the business community, and it shows in the moves she’s made since graduating from the EMBA McGill-HEC Montreal in 2014. She sold the insurance firm, la turquoise, of which she was CEO; she founded Capital Humain Plus, a consulting firm; she’s been appointed president of the board of the Economic Development Coporation of the Regional Municipality of Joliette (CDÉJ) and she joined Anges Québec. The success she’s having on this new path was underlined recently: she was named Chair of the Board of Directors of Anges Québec. As president of the board of directors of Anges Québec, she will contribute to the growth and the evolution of this network of 200 investor-members who invest in the diverse projects built by Québec’s entrepreneurs. The ‘angels’, Anges Québec’s members, are experienced entrepreneurs and professionals. They contribute to the start-up and growth of new businesses in many ways: as coaches, board members, promoters or through collaboration on business strategies. Ginette reflects on how the EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal has contributed to her development: "This program brought me a lot, even though I was already CEO of my company. Suzanne Gagnon (EMBA 2018) appointed National Director, Offer Evolution at Sobeys Inc. Suzanne Gagnon is in the last phase of the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA program: writing her final paper. A few months before her graduation, which is scheduled for February 2018, she has been appointed National Director, Offer Evolution at Sobeys Inc. Suzanne was chosen by Sobeys to do our program, and it is clear that they had plans for her. Suzanne has been working for Sobeys for over 20 years. She started as category manager, and has developed an expertise in product development and merchandizing for the Canadian supermarket chain. In her new role, she will be responsible for innovation and development for all Sobeys’ markets and in all product categories found in supermarkets “and maybe some that are not there yet!” added Suzanne, obviously very excited by this new nationwide challenge.
Stephane Dodier (EMBA 2010) is appointed Vice President Information Technology for Promutuel Assurance Stephane Dodier, a 2010 McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA graduate, has recently been appointed Vice President Information Technology for Promutuel Assurance, the 4th largest property and casualty insurer in Quebec. Stephane is in charge of over 100 employees and a well-stocked project portfolio. Previously, Stephane held the position of General Manager, IT Governance, Security and Risk, Americas Region for AIMIA, a firm specialized in loyalty programs. He was also Vice President, Information Technology for Optimum Financial Group and La Capitale General Insurance. Early in his career, he worked for Oracle and subsequently founded his own consulting firm. The latter was acquired in June 2000 by Covansys. Despite his impressive journey, Stephane was humble enough to admit that he still had a lot to learn. He started the EMBA program ten years ago. He appreciates that the program had a considerable impact on the subsequent stages of his career: "The learning received during my EMBA is still relevant today. It has served me in recent years and will be useful to me once again in this new role. I have particularly maximized the value of the modules dealing with innovation and business strategy. "
Caroline Morin (EMBA 2016) is appointed Senior Director, Communications and Corporate Marketing at Ivanhoé Cambridge After five years as Director of Internal and Corporate Communications at Ivanhoé Cambridge, Caroline Morin, a 2016 McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA graduate, has recently taken on a new role within the organization: Senior Director, Communications and Corporate Marketing. In her new role, Caroline is responsible, together with her team, for leading the development and execution of communications and marketing strategies and campaigns related to the organization’s business plan, while ensuring brand positioning, promotion, and protection for all Ivanhoé Cambridge's activities. “One of the most important things that I learned during the EMBA and which I use every day in my professional life is to remain open, to think differently and to always nurture the desire to do things differently. By being open-minded, I not only become a better manager but I am also better able to offer new ideas and be more innovative in my role and approach. Antoine Attara (EMBA 2016) joins classmate, Mike Allen, as Regional Manager at Applied Industrial Technologies Antoine Attara, an engineer with extensive purchasing, procurement and management experience and a 2016 EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal graduate, was recently appointed Regional Director of Applied Industrial Technologies, a distributor of industrial products/parts. Antoine will be responsible for directing all operations in the province of Quebec. It is a multidisciplinary role including the development of industrial customers, sales force management and all operational management of the 9 business offices with more than 160 employees. His new boss, Mike Allen, also a graduate of the EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal class of 2016, and Vice-President of Applied Industrial Technologies, was very pleased to announce this appointment to his graduate colleagues: "I'm excited about the idea of working with Antoine. Together, we will take a rather conservative business model in a rather conservative field, and bring it to new heights. Welcome to the 43 new participants of the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA program! 43 experienced executives, entrepreneurs and professionals recently started the McGill - HEC Montréal Executive MBA program. Specifically designed for senior executives, the EMBA consists of nine modules centred in part around the Managerial Mindsets developed by renowned professor Henry Mintzberg. Even though the group has vast business experience (17 years, on average), they still arrived for their first day of school feeling nervous. Happily, that nervousness also included excitement and a contagious energy. Despite the diversity of their journeys and the different reasons they have for undertaking this demanding program, the participants of this tenth cohort of the EMBA share a number of characteristics: : their desire to improve, to step back and have an impact; their courage to compare and contrast their experiences with those of experienced colleagues and professors; their humility to question their knowledge, attitudes and ways of doing things; their willingness to take the time, despite their busy schedules, to develop, as leaders and as individuals. The 30 finalists for the Prix Femmes d’affaires du Québec 2017 (2017 Quebec Business Women’s Award) were unveiled recently. One of the finalists is Ève Laurier, who is a 2011 McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA alumna. Ms. Laurier is the Ge at Edelman, a family-owned, independent communications marketing agency that helps companies evolve, promote and protect their brands and reputations. The finalists will be honored on November 8th at a gala during which the winner of each of the nine contest categories will be announced. In past editions of the contest, Danièle Bergeron and Louise Richer, both McGill – HEC Montréal EMBA alumnae, were selected as a finalist for this award. Marie Pier Germain promoted to Operations Director, Le Groupe Germain Hotels For over ten years, Marie Pier Germain has worked for the family business, Le Groupe Germain Hôtels. Although Le Groupe Germain was co-founded by her mother, Christiane Germain, and her uncle, Jean-Yves Germain, Marie Pier has had to prove herself as a manager and face many challenges before being promoted to Director of Operations. After studying engineering, Marie Pier held several positions within the organization, which is ranked among the 50 best-managed companies in Canada. She began her career in Calgary, contributing to the successful realization of the Hotel Le Germain complex. Next, she managed architects, designers and engineers in the construction and renovation of several Alt and Le Germain hotels. In 2015, a few months after joining the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA program, she took the helm as General Manager of the Montreal Alt Hotel. The same year she gave birth to her son. "The EMBA McGill HEC Montréal program was a very rewarding experience both professionally and personally, following the birth of my son. Despite all the challenges I've faced as a new mom, I always felt that I had the support required to successfully complete the program.
