Prestigious International Web Awards

Congratulations to Geneviève Rossier and her team at Radio-Canada for garnering 3 web awards for their web documentary entitled Exile Without End: Palestinians in Lebanon.

In fact, the web documentary won the Italia Award in the category “interactive website linked to a television or radio program” because it distinguished itself through its quality, creativity and innovation. The jury of the 64th annual award ceremony recognized the breadth, depth and relevance of the site. Founded in Capri in 1948, the Italia Award is considered the oldest and most prestigious international competition dedicated to media production.

Moreover, the unique website was honored in Boston during the 12th annual Online Journalism Award which celebrates the best and brightest of the digital journalism field. The jury of this esteemed international competition bestowed 2 awards to the site; the best online video journalism award and the best multimedia presentation award in the category of medium size websites.

Monique Leroux, the 4th cohort’s godmother

On September 14th, the 4th cohort of the EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal program commenced their 15 month journey in order to grow both as human beings and as managers. The grand opening ceremony began with a speech from their “godmother”, Monique F. Leroux, Chairman and CEO of Desjardins Group. She spoke with passion and authenticity on the topic of leadership. Showing great generosity and openness, she drew on her own journey to highlight the key elements of leadership: compassion, empathy, humility, emotional intelligence and intuition. After her speech, the participants engaged in a dialogue with their “godmother” which was gracefully moderated and guided by Professor Laurent Lapierre, a leading expert in the leadership domain. The participants who already have great business acumen (indeed as they each have an average of 19 years of work experience, which include an average of 13 years of management) felt privileged to take part in this stimulating exchange of ideas with someone as remarkable as Madame Leroux. All in all, it was a great start to an exciting journey. Just as Paul Desmarais Jr. (the first cohort’s “godfather”), Thierry Vandal (the second cohort’s “godfather”), and Serge Godin (the third cohort’s “godfather”), Madame Leroux demonstrated another necessary trait for leadership: great energy!

Cooperativa de Trabajo La Toma del Sur

The McGill-HEC Montreal EMBA class of 2012 is building a special relationship with the Cooperativa de Trabajo La Toma del Sur. They visited this cooperative as part of their worldly mindset module in Argentina. Following the extreme economic crisis in 2001, many companies were forced into bankruptcy and thousands of people were thrown out of work. Many of these people, especially those who were older or had little education, were never able to find work again. One outcome has been the formation of a number of cooperatives which carry out recycling – of cardboard, electronics, etc. We visited one of these cooperatives. In this particular cooperative, they recycle electronics, and part of the money they earn goes to fund a kitchen that makes and serves meals to 150 children per day. These women prepared lunch when we visited the cooperative, which gave us the opportunity for some good discussion with the men and women of the cooperative, who joined us for the meal. We learned about their lives and their goals with the cooperative. It was a terrific chance for us to leave behind our worlds of business and privilege, to learn about a resilient group building their future out of very difficult circumstances. The class was very impressed with the resourcefulness and positive attitude, and pride in accomplishment of people who have faced very difficult circumstances. As the classroom segment of the program neared its end, the director of the Worldly Mindset Module, Professor Omar Toulan, offered a fleece from the cooperative for the class to auction, to be able to provide an additional donation to the cooperative. The class had a better idea – within 2 minutes they had collected $720 for the cooperative, offering the fleece to one of their classmates who is helping the cooperative arrange the financing they need to purchase much needed tools and equipment.

Change Management with Roman Oryschuk

Change management with Roman Oryschuk, CEO and founder of Global Change Leaders and former CEO of GE Capital Solutions Europe.

Roman Oryschuk was an instrumental resource in the recent change management segment of the program. Participants presented the results of the change projects they had carried out through the course of the year, along with their learnings about their ability to foster change and their organization’s ability to change. There was a wide array of projects ranging from implementing an electronic dashboard to facilitate performance management in a retail chain, to building and adopting a matrix management structure in a technology company to restructuring and empowering the client service role in a financial services firm. Then they summarized their learnings as well as the questions they still had about change management. That’s where Mr. Oryschuk was able to provide valuable insights from his time at the helm of GE Capital Europe. The class talked about the difference between managing change in an organization and developing an organization that is adept of change. GE is clearly the latter – every one expects and believes in change. Stretch goals play a big role in this. Each year, targets are set at such a level that there’s no way to achieve them by simply working harder. Instead, the only way to meet the targets is to rethink and fundamentally change the way you do things. At GE, instead of a fear of change, change is good. Mr. Oryschuk emphasized repeatedly how energizing change can be. Some of the additional GE lessons he shared were: the contagion of success, the importance of integrity, the importance of self-confidence and speed, and the importance of keeping things simple and eliminating bureaucracy. He also shared the four E’s of leadership: to have Energy, to be able to Energize, the ability to Execute, and to have an Edge, which he defined as being able to see around the corner. He certainly demonstrated his ability to energize in his discussion with the class, and his message was a valuable one as the classroom portion of the program draws to a close.
