This past Sunday, Manon Jeannotte, current EMBA McGill-HEC Montréal participant, was elected Chief of the Micmac Nation of Gespeg band Council.

Manon won the election with 44.44% of the vote against 43.18% for Claude Jeannotte, the outgoing band leader who held the role for the last nine years.

Since last fall, Manon and three elected councillors of the Micmac Nation of Gespeg have demanded the resignation of outgoing Chief Claude Jeannotte. She denounced the lack of transparency of the former council, and now wants the nation’s collective interests to take precedence over the individual interests of elected officials.

Manon Jeannotte began the EMBA McGill-HEC Montreal program in September 2014. She was the first recipient of the McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA First Peoples’ Scholarship. At the start of the program she explained: “Throughout my career, I have continuously worked to improve the quality of life for my community, in areas such as the recognition of indigenous rights, negotiation, and economic, social and community development. My career is now at a turning point and for me it is obvious that I needed to attain a higher level of education; I needed to absorb new concepts and approaches. The EMBA helped me to further work with community members that wished to move towards self-governance. ”

Her new role as Chief of the Micmac Nation of Gespeg band Council will allow her to continue working towards these goals.
