Born in Canada from Iranian parents, one of the values from my heritage I cherish most is a deep appreciation for education and learning.

My maternal grandmother, especially, insisted upon how much learning mattered. After a difficult divorce, she attended adult school to learn how to read and write, just so she could sign her work cheques. Her story proves that education isn’t about prestige or titles — it’s about the ability to change the trajectory of your life. She instilled the importance of learning in her children, and my mother, the first of her family to attend university, carried it forward. Indeed, my parents encouraged me to be curious and embark on the EMBA journey, offering their unwavering support. In our family, learning is a lifelong commitment.

Learning has also meant opening myself up to new cultures and worldviews through books, travel and encounters. Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the diversity that exists within a single continent, and a reminder, especially today, to continue seeking and learning from different perspectives. And now I’m grateful to share these values with my own children. Seeing my daughter take pride in her Iranian heritage while embracing learning about a variety of topics tells me that this legacy is continuing.
