50 Leaders Join the EMBA McGill–HEC Montréal Class of 2028
The EMBA McGill–HEC Montréal welcomed its 19th cohort on September 16. Comprising 50 managers, executives, and entrepreneurs from 18 countries and more than 20 industries, the Class of 2028 reflects the diversity of backgrounds and experiences that characterize the program.
Participants have an average age of 44 and bring more than 20 years of professional experience on average. Nearly half currently hold vice-president or chief executive positions, while women represent 52% of the cohort.
Over the coming months, members of the cohort will take part in a leadership and management development journey designed to help them navigate complex organizational challenges and enhance their decision-making capabilities in an increasingly dynamic environment.
A pivotal moment
A survey conducted among incoming participants revealed a range of motivations that, while diverse, share a common thread: broadening perspectives, strengthening management capabilities, expanding professional networks, taking on a new challenge, or preparing for the next stage of a career.
For many, one of the program’s greatest strengths is the opportunity to learn alongside accomplished peers whose experiences, industries, and perspectives differ from their own.
“Pursuing an EMBA is a self-driven decision,” says Michel Filion, Director of Recruitment for the EMBA program. “Having the support of those around you matters, but first and foremost, the motivation must come from within. This is a commitment that requires you to bring your whole self, your experience, and your heart to the journey. The Class of 2028 is another remarkable group. What I look forward to most is seeing the collective spirit that emerges over time, the relationships that develop, and the ways in which participants help one another grow.”
A memorable first meeting
The first day of class often brings a unique mix of excitement, curiosity, and humility. As participants discover the backgrounds and accomplishments of their peers, many realize they are surrounded by exceptional leaders. It is a moment that can be as inspiring as it is challenging, reminding everyone that growth begins when we step outside our comfort zone.
For Marie-Hélène Laplante, Director of the EMBA Program, the launch of a new cohort remains one of the most meaningful moments of the year.
“There is something truly unique about that first gathering. Seeing individuals with impressive accomplishments choose to embark on this journey is always inspiring. The trust they place in us to guide them throughout the experience is both a privilege and a tremendous responsibility.”
This human dimension continues to inspire Louis Hébert, Professor of Strategy at HEC Montréal, Academic Co-Director, and Co-Founder of the EMBA program.
“After 19 cohorts, I remain inspired by the calibre and character of the leaders who join this program. When individuals with significant achievements are willing to share their experiences, challenge one another’s thinking, and learn together, the result is an extraordinary learning community.”
This year also marks a new chapter for John-Paul Ferguson, Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. After contributing to several cohorts as a Module Director, he is beginning his first year as Academic Co-Director.
“I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the journey of many cohorts over the years. This time, I have the privilege of experiencing it from beginning to end as Academic Co-Director. I look forward to meeting the participants and supporting them throughout this exceptional adventure.”
A community of leaders
Over the next 15 months, the Class of 2028 will explore new ways of thinking, leading, and creating impact. More than a degree, the EMBA McGill–HEC Montréal experience is an opportunity to reflect, challenge assumptions, build lasting relationships, and grow alongside an exceptional community of peers.
Designed for leaders who have already achieved a great deal yet remain curious enough to keep learning and courageous enough to keep evolving, the program continues to bring together individuals committed not only to their own development, but also to the growth of those around them.
