Personal and Professional Journey
My journey is deeply rooted in my parents’ experience as boat people who fled Vietnam in 1980 to escape the communist regime. Their resilience in rebuilding a life from scratch in Canada has profoundly influenced my aspirations. Professionally, I’ve pursued a career in dentistry, motivated by a desire to give back to a community that welcomed my family during our most challenging times. My academic path and professional achievements are not just personal milestones but also tributes to my parents’ sacrifices.
Inspiration for Joining the EMBA Program
The decision to join the EMBA program stems from my desire to merge clinical excellence with strategic management. Having experienced significant roles in research and education, I recognized the need to enhance my leadership and managerial skills to more effectively drive innovations in healthcare. The EMBA program presents an opportunity to refine these skills, allowing me to lead more effectively and broaden the impact of my work in dentistry.
Influence of Asian Cultural Heritage on Leadership
My leadership style is profoundly influenced by the virtues of resilience, respect, and community, values deeply rooted in my Asian heritage. These principles were exemplified by my parents’ journey from Vietnam to Canada, teaching me the importance of perseverance and ethical responsibility. In my leadership roles, these values translate into fostering a collaborative environment, emphasizing mutual respect, and prioritizing collective well-being.
Role of People of Asian Origin in Canadian Society
Canadians of Asian descent play a critical role in enriching our nation’s cultural diversity and contributing to its socio-economic development. As a professional of Asian origin, I believe we bring unique perspectives and values that enhance innovation and community cohesion. It is crucial to continue advocating for greater representation and equality to fully realize the potential of our diverse society.
Key Lessons from Asian Culture in Professional Life
The key lessons from my Asian background that resonate in my professional life include the importance of education, the value of hard work, and a strong sense of duty towards community welfare. These lessons have guided my approach to patient care, research, and teaching, allowing me to contribute positively and meaningfully in my field.
Importance of Celebrating Asian Heritage Month
Celebrating Asian Heritage Month holds special significance for me as it honors the rich history and contributions of Asians in Canada, including stories like that of my parents. It’s a time to reflect on our collective achievements and the ongoing challenges we face. This celebration fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diversity that strengthens our social fabric.
